David Roderick Brown of Glen passed away Sunday, March 16, at Memorial Hospital in North Conway after a long illness. He was 73.

Brown was called Charley by closest friends, and there were a lot of them. He’d lived in the Mt. Washington Valley since 1995, when he moved north from Boston. During his years in New Hampshire, he ran Valley Auto Brokers with his wife of 19 years, Rachael. Together they bought and sold used cars, rented cars and trucks, detailed vehicles. He was a lifelong fan of cars and racing. For their honeymoon, he took his wife to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Earlier jobs in valley included managing the Red Parka Steakhouse and Pub, working at Horsefeathers Restaurant. He also worked as a personal trainer.

In Massachusetts, he owned Brown’s Steakhouse, a popular gathering place for local sports figures. He was a boy when his mother passed away and he grew up in Brighton in a house filled with 1960s’-era members of the Boston Bruins.

After high school he joined the U.S. Air Force, and was stationed in West Germany, from 1959 to 1961, where he worked as a propeller mechanic. After his service, he worked in sales for National Cash Register. After his father’s death, he took over the family restaurant on Beacon Street in Brookline.

He was born October 24, 1940 and is predeceased by parents, Charles Lawrence Brown and Hilda Roderick Brown, and a sister, Susan Brown McGibbon in 2005. Survivors include his wife, Rachael Rubin Brown, and daughters Hilary Sara Brown of New York City and Victoria Rose Brown of Philadelphia, nieces, nephews and several cousins.

Funeral service at Furber and White White 2925 Mountain Highway, North Conway, 11:00 am, Saturday March 22nd. Immediately following friends are invited to gather at the Red Parka Pub in Glen.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of choice.
